At the beginning of Chapter 5, Marty considers three immediate problems – keeping Shiloh hidden, keeping the dog quiet, and getting food to the dog.  Write a summary of how Marty handles these problems.

What is the difference between how Marty feels about dogs and how Judd feels about dogs?  How do you know?  What is the evidence from the text.  Don’t forget to quote accurately.

What would you do if you knew an animal was being abused by its owner?

What are the qualities that make a person a good friend? What kind of person would you choose to be your friend? List several qualities and reasons.

Why is it important to learn about different places and cultures around the world?  Explain your thinking.

How would you react to a law that denied you permission to sit in the front of a bus or enter a hotel or restaurant?

What are your hopes for 5th grade?  What are you hoping to learn?  What kinds of activities would you like to do?  What do you hope to accomplish by the end of 5th grade?

As you are approaching the end of your time at Montara (or at least in the Magnet), spend some time thinking about some of your best memories from your time here.  Some ideas to think about are:

• who are/were your best friends here and why
• who were your favorite teachers and why
• what was your favorite project and why did you enjoy doing it
• what was your favorite field trip and why
• what was your favorite show or performance
• did you receive any special awards?
• did you participate in any extra activities (clubs, student council, chorus, etc.)
• the funniest thing that happened while you were here
• the greatest thing that happened while you were here
• anything else that you’d like to share

Write a GOOD, LONG post about some of your favorite memories.
